The anticipated audience for FIE represents a broad spectrum of backgrounds. Attendees cover all disciplines relating to engineering education and come from a variety of institutions and organizations worldwide. Typical interests range from education research to extending promising results into their own educational settings. Attendees are eager to learn not only of your results but how your results might be applied in their particular discipline at their particular institution.
* Please add the term ‘Work in Progress’ or ‘WIP’ to the first sentence of your abstract.<\/strong>
FIE uses a non-traditional format for the presentation of WIP or \u2018Short\u2019 papers. Authors will be able to take advantage of the format to gather feedback and ideas for their current projects. See the conference website for more information.<\/p>\n

You can categorize your paper as:
1. Innovative Practice
2. Research-to-Practice
3. Research
Please note that one author from each paper is expected to register for and participate in the full conference.<\/p>\n

These categories influence the overall structure and contents of the submitted work. Each category follows with suggestions for expected paper contents.<\/p>\n

1. Innovative Practice Category<\/h2>\n

The innovative practice category is for scholarly proposals of reflective or novel practice in the area of engineering and\/or computing education. Excellent proposals are well situated in prior literature on teaching and learning, and outlines an innovation of value and interest to engineering and\/or computing educators.
Abstracts: Innovative Practice Abstracts should be 300-500 words and should clearly present the paper’s relevance to engineering education and how the work is innovative. In addition, each abstract should be identified as a \u201cWork-in-Progress\u201d or “WIP” in the title paper track proposal, and define (minimally) one topic keyword.
Each abstract must briefly state the specific contribution of the paper to the innovative practice of engineering and\/or computing education. Contributions may be made in various forms, and should include a description of what is unique about the innovative practice, how the innovative practice differs from and builds on previous practice as documented in the literature, and new ideas that conference participants would take away from this paper. The abstract should describe the setting for the innovative practice in the broad context of engineering and\/or computing education, (not necessarily the particular institutional context), motivations for the innovative practice, and the results obtained. Abstracts must present the paper’s relevance to engineering and\/or computing education and how the work is innovative.<\/p>\n

Abstracts: Research-to-Practice Abstracts should be 300-500 words and should clearly present the theoretical frameworks of teaching and learning being applied, and the implications for the practice of engineering and\/or computing education. In addition, each abstract should be identified as a \u201cWork-in-Progress\u201d or “WIP” in the title paper track proposal, and define at least one topic keyword.
Each abstract must briefly state the specific contribution of the paper towards illustrating how engineering and\/or computing education research informs educational practice. Contributions may be made in various forms, but they should describe the setting for the practice in the broad context of engineering and\/or computing education, (not necessarily the particular institutional context), motivations for the practice, research that supported the practice, and results obtained. Abstracts must outline the theoretical frameworks that inform the practice and state the implications for educational practice with a focus on action.<\/p>\n

Abstracts must provide a summary of the research contribution\/expected results and brief statement of the implications for educational practice with a focus on action.<\/p>\n

5-Minute Postcard Sessions for \u201cWork-In-Progress\u201d (WIP) Papers.<\/h1>\n

Instructions for Authors<\/h2>\n

As promised, FIE will use a non-traditional format for WIP papers.\u00a0 Authors will be able to take advantage of the format to gather feedback and ideas for their current projects.<\/p>\n

The session will have 2 distinct components<\/h2>\n

PART 1:\u00a05-minute \u201cpostcard\u201d presentations by 10 presenters<\/b>. Presenters will have 5 minutes total to introduce themselves and overview their work using the 2-slide postcard presentation slide template provided. During the 5-minute presentation there are no questions or answers (Q&As). All Q&A will be during the poster display time. PART 2:\u00a0Poster Session.<\/b> Presenters will display visuals\/poster and answer questions of those who come talk with them.<\/p>\n

PLEASE READ the following instructions:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Use the\u00a0Power Point template<\/a>\u00a0to create your postcard presentation.\u00a0You may color it differently, use different fonts, insert images, etc., but keep the size of the postcard slides as they are. Also,\u00a0you CAN ONLY use 2 SLIDES (not 1 or 3)\u2026.2!<\/b><\/li>\n
  2. The purpose of the postcard presentation (2 slides) is to give yourself the opportunity to provide an overview of your actual poster (an elevator pitch) to the session attendees.\u00a0 Be sure to put out the questions that might entice people to meet with you.<\/li>\n
  3. You will have exactly 5 minutes and the 2 postcard presentation slides to make your pitch. \u00a0We understand that 6 minutes will not provide sufficient time to present all the details of the work. Instead, we encourage you to focus on aspects of your work\u2019s progress and findings to date that will spark further conversation in the rest of the session. (It is recommended that you NOT attempt to put your entire poster on the 2 slides, people will not be able to read it). You SHOULD put enough information on the slides to make people want to come talk to you during the poster display portion of the session. Whether you are finished or not, at the end of your 5 minutes, we will move on.<\/li>\n
  4. Create a poster no larger than 4\u2019x4\u2019.\u00a0The poster can be smaller or you can choose to print out multiple PowerPoint slides or have no visuals. The design of your \u201cposter\u201d will be at your discretion. But if you want people to talk to you during this portion of the session, you may need a visual to refer to discuss your session.<\/li>\n
  5. At the session, we will have tape for you to tape your poster (or whatever you bring) to the wall or to present at a table.<\/li>\n
  6. IMPORTANT: upload\u00a0your postcard Power Point to EDAS\u00a0no later than Midnight, Eastern time,\u00a0Wednesday, September 26<\/i>. This deadline is important, because the moderator will merge all the slides into one slide set for the session. If you include more than 2 slides, the moderator will cut your presentation to 2 slides.<\/li>\n
  7. Be sure to arrive at the session early.\u00a0By arriving early, you will have enough time to check that the moderator has your slides and you have time to display your visuals before the session starts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Please note: -You are required to print and bring the poster yourself. – The PowerPoint presentation may have animations and timers, however, only 2 slides are allowed, and you must remain in the 5 minute time limit. No exceptions.
