Dear\u00a0Colleagues,<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Frontiers\u00a0in\u00a0Education\u00a0Steering Committee\u00a0representing\u00a0the three sponsoring societies\u00a0has made the decision to move this year\u2019s planned FIE 2020 50th anniversary physical\u00a0conference to online format.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the light of the current forecasts regarding the continuation of the\u00a0current\u00a0pandemic into\u00a0the Autumn, as well as being aware of the travel restrictions that are in place for many of our\u00a0members and authors, \u00a0the FIE steering committee has decided to hold an online conference\u00a0for FIE 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we move towards the 50th anniversary event, we are aware that you will have experience of other conferences in online digital platforms. We have taken several decisions to enhance the conference experience and we believe this is a unique opportunity to try something new. <\/span>One exciting opportunity of the online format is the ability to extend access to the conference, and hopefully extend\u00a0participation to those who might not normally be able to travel internationally for a variety of\u00a0reasons. In particular, we are working on different formats to ensure the sessions are\u00a0engaging and dynamic while minimizing the impact of differing time zones as the FIE\u00a0community stretches across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n

This will also result in new registration rates designed so that the conference will precisely\u00a0break even in 2020 based on our estimates of current expenses. Due to the final negotiations on the registration fee and some delays in our IEEE Xplore process the opening of the registration and submission pages has been delayed. Submission of already accepted camera-ready papers has now opened, but due to the delay we are extending the deadline for submission of camera-ready papers to July 13<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The registration page for FIE 2020 will open at the beginning of August when the final registration fees have been decided by the Steering Committee (these fees will naturally be lower than the usual fees for a physical conference), which means that we will allow for submission of camera-ready papers before registering to the conference.<\/span><\/p>\n

Changing to an online conference will require major adjustments, but also offers unique\u00a0advantages, and we will keep you up to date as we move forward with the process. At this\u00a0time, we do not have exact details to share, but please know we are working diligently to\u00a0make this new format as engaging and budget friendly as possible. Looking forward, FIE\u00a02021 is still scheduled as a physical conference in Lincoln, NE, USA, and we plan to hold FIE\u00a02022 in Sweden so you can all still experience the castle and a fabulous banquet!<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank you for your understanding regarding this change, and we hope you too see the online format as an opportunity for us to engage at the frontiers of online education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notifications for most contributions to the IEEE\/ASEE Frontiers in Education 2020 conference have now been sent to authors. Any remaining notifications will be sent in the next few days.<\/p>\n

Despite the current pandemic and travel restrictions still in place in many parts of the world, we are still committed to holding a physical conference in Uppsala, SWEDEN<\/strong>\u00a0in October, but are also considering virtual alternatives in case the conduct of a face-to-face<\/strong> event proves uneconomic or logistically infeasible.<\/p>\n

The Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference is a major international conference focusing on educational innovations and research in engineering and computing education and this year we are celebrating the 50th\u00a0anniversary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
